It’s very possible you’ve inherited your family’s nose or your mother’s eyes. It’s all based on your ancestors’ physical characteristics, but what about generational curses… can you inherit them?

We’ve all looked in the mirror a time or two and said, ‘I look like my daddy’ or ‘I get it from my momma.’  You may be short or tall, fair-skinned or dark complexioned. But what about our bad habits? Can you get them from your parents? The experts say agree and so does the Bible.

Generational influences have the power to offer you curses or blessings. You know there were curses because it was mentioned in the Bible. The Bible speaks of generational curses as well. It tells that they are still in existence today. God never once said, “I’m going to bless you.” He always said, “I am going to bless you and your descendants.”

As a consequence, the people can determine that curses are the direct result of our transgressions. Generational curses are punishments for sins from one generation to the next. Understanding this fact gives you the capacity to transform not just your life, but also the lives of others in your family.

When the first couple ate fruit from the forbidden tree, they committed the first sin. They set the precedent that would apply to every man and woman after them. The Bible’s definition of a curse is different from what most people believe or see in the big screen. You can’t just wave a wand and expect a person’s behavior or habits suddenly change. God is the only entity to cast a curse and apply it to future family members.

How Do You Recognize Generational Curses?

Youngsters growing up in abusive homes will probably become abusers themselves. Those with alcoholic parents and parents who are violent or neglectful are more prone to misuse alcohol and their children. This kind of logic is applicable to sexual and domestic violence. In addition, we see it in oppression, drug addiction, and any other evil. Although it is only a question of semantics, we shall refer to the idea as a curse for the sake of this blog.

How Can You Break Generational Curses?

While sin is handed down, the consequences do not have to be. Generational curses are passed down via the blood line and can only be lifted by the blood. Change is made possible through Christ.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.” (James 5:16)

The Bible demonstrates that prayer is effective and necessary for a Christian living. The Bible provides guidance for self-improvement. You can’t lift generational curses by repeating the same mistakes. Rather remove them by taking a different approach that results in positive change, growth, and development.
