Singer-songwriter Demi Lovato made headlines with her drug overdose recently. Initial reports claim that she had a heroin overdose, but a source later revealed she did not OD on that drug.
Los Angeles Police Department responded to what was termed a medical emergency to the Hollywood Hills home of the former Disney star. The responders gave Demi Lovato Narcan, which is a medication that counters the effects of opioids. She was then immediately transported to a local hospital.
Demi Lovato Health Complications
Following her hospitalization, a representative for the singer said Demi Lovato was awake and spending time with her family. The statement added the family was requesting privacy in light of the speculations surrounding Lovato’s health condition. It added they are focusing on the “Sober” singer’s recovery.
But nearly a week after Demi Lovato was brought to the hospital, it was revealed she was suffering from complications due to the overdose. Demi remained in the health facility because she had a high fever and was suffering from extreme nausea.
At the time she was “expected to make a full recovery” physically at least. Since then she’s been released from the hospital and is said to be in rehab.
Overwhelming Support for Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato is getting an overwhelming support from family and friends in the midst of this ordeal. Ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama has been at Lovato’s side together with her family. The NCIS actor was spotted visiting the hospital a couple of times.
The former couple had been together for almost six years before they called it quits in 2016. When Lovato celebrated three years of sobriety back in 2015, the Skyscraper singer credited her then-boyfriend for the success of her journey to remain sober.
In an emotional Instagram post, Demi thanked the actor for being with her through the ups and downs. She went on to say she “really wouldn’t be alive today without him.”
Other celebrities took to Twitter to express their support for Lovato:
Lady Gaga wished Demi Lovato self-compassion and inner peace and accompanied her tweet with #ImConfidentInDemi.
Riverdale actress Lili Reinhart expressed how she looks up to Lovato for speaking openly about mental health. She also praised her for being an inspiration to many for her body positivity.

Years of Battle with Substance Addiction and Mental Health Issues
The singer opened up about her battle with substance addiction and mental health issues last year when Demi released Simply Complicated on Youtube. In the documentary, Lovato said she started using alcohol and cocaine at the age of 17 under the prodding of her friends.
While she was wary about using drugs because her mother cautioned against it, Lovato admitted to being curious. Her father, an alcoholic struggling with addiction, chose drugs and alcohol over his family.
In 2011, she sought an inpatient treatment following a physical altercation with a backup dancer who disclosed she was using Adderall while she was on tour. Often used to treat attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, the drug works as a stimulant affecting chemicals in the brain and nerves. It is regarded as habit-forming and thus prone to abuse.
It was during this stint at a rehab facility she found out about her bipolar disorder.
Lovato admitted she was not easy to work with at the time. She was either on drugs or craving drugs, even if she had sober companions. She further stated how embarrassed she is with the person that she was then.
Demi Lovato Couldn’t Go a Day Without Cocaine
In 2013, in an interview with Access Hollywood, Demi Lovato shared how bad her addiction was. The singer claimed she couldn’t survive an hour without using cocaine. It even got to the point where she would smuggle it inside planes and wait until everyone was asleep before she taking it.
Her sobriety did not last long and she was back to using drugs daily. There came a point when she used Xanax and cocaine at the same time. During this time, she claimed she thought she was overdosing because she “started to choke a bit” and her “heart started racing”.
But Demi Lovato’s management team, including Phil McIntyre, got her help. They were instrumental in getting Lovato back on the road to recovery. However, this comes after they told her they would stop representing the entertainer if she didn’t seek treatment.
They also took away her phone. Consequently, this led to several years of sobriety. If she ever entered any heroin rehab centers nobody mentioned it.
Unfortunately, Demi Lovato even after years of sobriety, a relapse hit. She opened up in June about her relapse through the song “Sober”. The lyrics alluded to how sorry Lovato was for not being sober any longer. She asked for forgiveness from her momma, daddy, and all the people who had been there for her.
