Simply writing about a hamburger patty recipe reminds me of home and grandma’s Jamaican beef patty recipe. She made it with juicy red meat and seasonings right from her garden. Grandma wrapped the ground beef and herbs in a delicately portioned pastry dough and popped them into the oven.

I grew up in St. Ann but moved to the US with my family as a young man. But, I’ll never forget the time that I spent living in Jamaica. What I remember the most is my grandmother routinely hand making these little meat patties to complete any meal.

Just the thought of it makes me homesick and my mouth water. By the way, you might want to wipe the corner of your mouth, too. I’m just saying, it’s not a nice look. Haha, but I understand!

These meat patties are my grandmother’s favorites. Out of all my family’s Jamaican side dishes, this easy beef patty recipe is almost as good as tasting Jamaica itself. The ingredients are authentic and deeply rooted in the island’s culture just like jerk chicken.

Here’s an exclusive peek at grandma’s recipe

Grandma’s Jamaican Beef Patty Recipe and Ingredients

This Jamaican beef patty calls for two core components of the meat pies: the dough and the savory beef filling. However, some would argue the most important ingredients of this recipe are the herbs and spices.

They are essentially at the heart of preparing Jamaican cuisine. The following measurements yield ten delicious patties and can be adjusted accordingly.

The Dough

This flaky pastry dough puts the “pie” in “meat pies.” It comes out of the oven as a beautiful gold color ready to be pulled apart and devoured.

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • This can be adjusted to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ cup of butter [Can be substituted with shortening if desired, but butter will give the crust the most delectable flavor]
  • 1/3 cup of water

The Beef Filling

The heart of grandmother’s Jamaican beef patties recipe is this spiced beef filling that carries a depth of flavors with it. They are sure to satisfy any palate. These measurements will make for a mild filling, but don’t be shy to experiment!

An authentic Jamaican beef patty often contains a dash of Scotch bonnet pepper, so feel free to add that or any other spice of preference to adjust the taste.

  • 2 tablespoons of margarine
  • ½ cup of beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon of curry powder
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon of dried thyme
  • 1 lb of ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • ½ cup of breadcrumbs

Making The Crust for the Jamaican Beef Patty

Mix the flour, curry powder and salt together in a bowl. Add in the butter at room temperature and mix everything together. The mixture should appear to be coarse, easily breaking into crumbs.

This is okay because if you stir the ingredients into a smooth consistency, you will end up with a hard crust rather than a light and flaky one. Then, form a log out of the dough and cut it into ten equal portions.

Now that you have the mini-cylinders, roll them into flat circles that are around six inches in diameter and 1/8 inches thick. Set these circles to the side while you prepare the filling.

Making the Jamaican Beef Patty Filling

Place a skillet over medium heat and allow the margarine to melt in it. Once the margarine has been adequately warmed, add the onions and sauté them until they are clear. Then, add the ground beef to the pan.

Once you’ve got that going, stir in all your seasonings, including the curry powder, thyme, salt, and pepper. Allow the beef to brown, stirring often so the meat is cooked thoroughly and evenly.

Finally, add the beef broth and breadcrumbs. Reduce the heat to a medium-low and allow the mixture to simmer until the beef has absorbed all the broth. Turn the heat off once this has happened.

Putting it Altogether

Marry the dough and meat together as they were meant to be. Grab a generous spoon of filling and place it in the center of the pastry circle.

Fold the pastry circle over, pressing the edges together with the help of a fork. Not only does this help the patty stay together, but it will also look nice for presentation once its time to serve the Jamaican beef patty.

Repeat this process until all the patties have been folded. Now, bring in the beaten egg and brush the yolk onto the tops of each patty.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Spread each Jamaican beef patty evenly on a baking sheet coated with nonstick spray or lined with foil.

Bake the patties for twenty-five to thirty minutes, until the crust is a crispy golden brown. Once the spicy Jamaican beef patties are ready, let them cool for five minutes before serving.

The most refreshing part about this easy beef patty recipe is that it is as much a pastry as it is an appetizer, a side dish or a quick lunch on the go. The Jamaican beef patty is a delicious treat the kids can grab this summer whenever they want a snack. They can also help make them as well.
